Job Description

The Charge Nurse functions in a clinical capacity, plans, supervises, and coordinates the care of the patients on the unit. Assesses patient care needs to ensure that adequate staff is available at all times to facilitate patient attainment of expected outcomes. Serves as a member of the administrative team and the duties that entails.
  1. A minimum of 3-5 years of direct patient care experience in an acute care setting; critical care experience preferred; leadership experience in a hospital setting preferred.
  2. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
  3. Current licensure in the state of Kentucky as an RN; Current competency in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation with ACLS required; Current basic EKG interpretation program successfully completed.
  4. Emotionally stable, physically fit, and able to cope with emergencies.
  5. Proficiency required in interpreting and carrying our physician orders
  6. Activity in State, Regional and National Professional associations is desirable
  1. Manages day to day activities of clinical staff located on Acute Care unit.
  2. Takes rotating administrative call as scheduled and covers shifts if necessary.
  3. Coordinates with the staff education nurse to ensure appropriate training and inservices for staff.
  4. Assists with the development, implementation and monitoring of quality indicators to ensure positive patient outcomes and identifies opportunities for process improvement.
  5. Ensures care plans are current , updated and individualized to patient needs by performing open chart audits.
  6. Attends weekly Patient Care Conference, daily Flash meetings and other administrative meetings and committees as required.
  7. Demonstrates the ability to hold staff accountable for behavior using appropriate leadership skills and interventions for counseling of staff as needed.
  8. Demonstrates the ability to build positive relationships with staff at all levels of the organization, provides constructive feedback regarding process failures and participates in resolution and a proactive and positive manner.
  9. Performs weekly patient satisfaction rounds.
  10. Responds to patient and family complaints, enters complaints and resolutions into the Risk Management System.
  11. Assists with data collection to monitor compliance to Nursing Goals and Objectives.
  1. Strength Factor – Requires exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  2. Repetitive Motion – in typing and computer work
  3. Agility – requires the ability to do one or more of the following:
  • Walking/standing for extended periods
  • Kneeling/crouching
  • Bending/leaning
  • Pushing/pulling
  • Lifting/carrying
  • Sitting for extended periods
  • Grasping/holding objects
  1. Eyesight Ability – requires the ability to see within normal limits with or without visual aids and must be able to distinguish colors.
  2. Audio Acuity – requires the ability to hear and distinguish sound within normal limits.
  3.  Linguistic Speech – requires the ability to express or communicate in spoken words
  4.  Mental Acuity – requires the ability to reason and make independent judgments.
  5.  Occupational Exposure – requires working with and/or around hazardous materials, i.e., blood borne pathogens           and chemical/hazardous materials and/or waste.
 Must also be able to perform the following with or without the aid of mechanical devices: fine hand coordination, ability to read and write, ability to detect odors, and ability to remain calm under stress.
