Director of Surgical Services

The Surgical Services Nurse Director, reporting to the CNO, is responsible for direction of patient care in the operative environment. S/he manages 25 staff members in the Ambulatory Surgery, Surgery and PACU departments, Central Sterilization and Cath Lab. Consults with staff, physicians and Nurse Executive on nursing issues and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Formulates budget for department.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
  • Directs actions toward supervision of nursing care given to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients within the surgical suite and PACU, according to nursing principles.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.  
  • Provides for safe transportation of all patients to and from Surgical Services Department.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.  Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Supports a culture of safety and quality.
  • Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the patient care unit policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests results.
  • Verifies availability of all supplies required for correct operation of the department.
  • Obtains supplies per PAR levels.
  • Directs all safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury in any way to patient, staff or equipment.
  • Controls traffic to avoid infection.
  • Verifies that proper temperature, humidity, ventilation and lighting are maintained to provide a comfortable, safe work environment.
  • Assists surgeons in operations through provision of qualified staff; formulates schedule which provides staff available for all procedures.
  • Assures presence of Circulating RN and PACU nurses for all cases.
  • Continuously supervises staff to ensure quality of nursing care.
  • Assigns personnel; delegates specific duties and tasks.
  • Schedules and assigns staff to increase efficiency and coordination of department. Staffs according to standards.
  • Reports changes of any type to Surgical Services staff and reports changes to departments affected by the changes (i.e., Pathology, Imaging).
  • Delegates, reviews performance improvement monitoring; analyzes and evaluates Surgical Services Department to improve nursing care.
  • Develops, revises and implements Surgical Services policies and procedures.
  • Participates in planning Surgical Services Department budget.
  • Provides monthly in-services and provides orientation for new staff members.
  • Plans, controls, directs and coordinates administrative duties to ensure the functioning of the department and staff.
  • Completes evaluations and submits two (2) weeks prior to review.  New employees are given checklists, oriented and evaluated at the end of 90 days.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory and management; demonstrates knowledge of disaster and emergency policies and procedures.  Keeps informed of new developments in nursing and surgery.  Demonstrates knowledge of good interpersonal relationships.
  • Communicates job expectations; posts results of performance improvement monitoring.
  • Ensures time-sheets are accurately completed as required.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings.  Allows staff to participate in problem-solving.
  • Supervises and oversees sterilization process.
  • Supervises clinical aspects of Central Service Department.
  • Provides and controls supplies and equipment needed for successful operation of the Surgical Services Department.
  • Directs and delegates control of inventories to ensure proper amounts available.
  • Verifies that narcotics and controlled substances are counted and locked, per hospital policy. Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Evaluates needs for new or different items in regard to present and new trends or needs of the department.
  • Observes use and handling of supplies to decrease mishandling and breakage.
  • Supervises care of OR suite and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility and operational ability of all items.Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment and supplies to ensure good working condition.
  • Ensures that departments supervised are clean and provide a safe environment in which employees and patients are protected from physical, chemical and biomed hazards.
  • Responsible for ensuring that departmental equipment is clean and in good working order.
  • Responsible for ensuring that supplies and other inventory needed to provide patient care is available, appropriate to the task, within acceptable dating and unexpired.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Job Requirements

  • Completes annual education requirements.

  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations.

  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times

  • Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services.

  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.

  • Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.

  • Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.

  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.

  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.

  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

  • Meets all applicable regulatory requirements, including but not limited to; state, federal and CMS Conditions of Participation requirements.


Education and Experience:


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  BSN preferred.

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Texas.

  • Current BCLS certification, ACLS certification and PALS certification

  • At least two (2) years of experience in surgical nursing.


Skills:


  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Additional languages preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal skills.
