Job Description

PCA - Patient Care Attendant


  • Previous experience in hospital, nursing home or LTACH patient care preferred. 
  • High school graduate or equivalent with documented competency in providing basic nursing care in accordance with skills list.
  • Physical Activity: Dictionary of Occupational Titles Strength Rating M. M: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects and exceeds light work.   Work Hazards of Risks - routine hazards involved in performing nursing activities, including potential exposure to infectious processes, potential exposure to hazardous substances, potential musculoskeletal injuries.  OSHA Blood Borne Risk Category I

Primary Duties

  • Provides an appropriate environment for the provision of nursing care to individual patients by maintaining the patient room in an orderly manner and assisting in maintaining neatness of work environment.
  • Provides designated patient care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse according to physicians' orders and in conformance with approved patient care standards.
  • Assesses vital signs with reporting of significant changes to licensed nurse.
  • Records intake and output on nursing work sheet with notification of licensed nurse when intake or output is unusually high or low.
  • Assists in feeding patients--does NOT provide any type of eternal feeding.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living--oral care, bathing, positioning, elimination.
  • Applies appropriate transfer techniques such as pivot transfers, use of sliding boards, and use of hoer lift.
  • Applies principles of infection control in the provision of patient care activates.

Additional Duties

  • Accurately reports changes in patients' conditions to licensed nurse responsible for patient when indicated.
  • Maintains professional level of conduct on nursing unit at all times.
  • Follows necessary and pertinent safety precautions during the performance of job duties to prevent injury to self, patient, and/or others and to prevent damages to hospital equipment/property.  Has experienced no avoidable accidents and has not contributed to any in the past 12 month.
  • Consistently provides outstanding service to all patients, physicians, fellow employees, and guests as appropriate to position.

  • Responds to all reasonable requests in an appropriate and timely manner and communicates in a concise and positive manner. Consistently maintains control of feelings, emotions, body language.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with ContinueCare policy.
  • Presents constructive feedback regarding system or process failures and participates in resolution in a proactive and positive manner.
  • Embraces diversity within the work environment and consistently deals with all customers in a friendly and  respectful manner.

Professional Conduct and Work Habits

  • Supports teamwork and cooperation with co-workers in daily activities.  Readily volunteers assistance to help co-workers complete tasks.  Is present at work when expected.
  • Demonstrates through verbal and non-verbal communications openness to change or new ideas.  Willingly learns and adapts to changes in work environment and new work methods as introduced.  Demonstrates flexibility to fluctuating workload and effectively prioritizes assignments.
